Participate

The best way to connect with GCDI’s interdisciplinary community of students, faculty, scholars, and technologists is to participate in any of our many workshops, events, working groups, and institutes. Regardless of your level of comfort or familiarity with technology, GCDI’s activities provide a wide range of opportunities and cultivate a community of practice that does its best to respond to new voices and new ideas. Below are a few ways to get involved, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, let us know.

Come to one of our Events

Consult the calendar to see upcoming events and sign up online to save your seat! Each year, we sponsor a wide range of events that include internationally-recognized speakers, local artists and creators, and CUNY faculty and students. Past speakers have included Nicole Starosielski, Wendy Chun, and (insert name). Our events are always free and usually open to the public. GCDI is home to the CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative, which hosts an annual event where CUNY students, faculty, and staff share their digital projects in three minute “speed” presentations. We host a GC Digital Showcase each year in May, where students introduce their digital scholarship, and our themed series of speakers and workshops–like the GCDI Sound Series–connect theory-driven conversation to hands-on learning.

Sign up for our Workshops

GCDI offers workshops designed to meet the needs of a broad range of interests. We offer some workshops regularly, such as “The Lexicon of Digital Humanities”–designed for those interested in a brief introduction to digital humanities–through “Introduction to Python”–a short course designed to familiarize participants with a popular programming language. Other workshops may be developed and offered in response to student interests. For a current listing of our workshops,  check out the upcoming workshops on our calendar–or better yet, subscribe to it!

Consult with a GC Digital Fellow

Are you interested in starting a project, but unsure where to begin? Would you like to map out a plan to learn the skills you need to complete your project? Are you stuck on a technical glitch or have a specific question you would like to work through with someone? GC Digital Initiatives and the GC Digital Fellows offer one-on-one consultations for faculty and students. Students may request one 30-minute meeting with a fellow with a potential for one follow up meeting on a first-come-first-served basis. GC-affiliated faculty may also sign up for consultations to discuss current or future projects, pedagogy, scholarly communication, creating a website, and more. Sign-up for a consultation here.
